More of life's adventures.
My mom's band played a show today.. but since I'm a state away, the only way to see it was through the online game (Second Life) that she uses to broadcast her shows live.
It's always fun to go and support her, and the sound quality was fantastic considering I was watching her avatar play for a crowd at a virtual bar. Just another reminder of the endless possibilities of the internet....
I had created an avatar more than two years ago so that we could have mother-daughter time while I was living in Texas (we watched a ballet together: artists choreographed a dance and synchronized their avatars' movements to the music.. it was oddly breathtaking!).
During my couple months of playing, I met people here and there and made a few friends. (I won't forget you Senri and Gaki <3)
I stopped playing when I moved to Arizona and my brief venture into the world of Second Life ended.
Fast forward two years as I log back in for the first time to see my mom's show.. and out of the blue, I see an IM from someone I had met back then.
Apparently the day he met me was his first day playing the game, and he was amazed by how friendly I was to a lowly noob. So touched was he, in fact, that he had taken a snapshot of my avatar and held onto it through the years. After I vanished, he thought he would never have a chance to thank me for my kindness. Now here I was. My chat log filled with his words that he had been waiting to say for almost two years.
The smallest gesture of kindness can have an impact on a person in ways you couldn't have imagined. Even if you never get to hear them say thanks, the gesture was not forgotten...

Ahh, life's little adventures. Never a dull moment. Story incoming :)
Yesterday morning I realized that I'm almost out of my favorite makeup (MAC ftw), and the nearest place that has a MAC cosmetics counter is 10 miles away at a Nordstrom's in Chandler. I had never been there, but the mall is supposed to be pretty nice, so I get ready and I start to head to Chandler.... and as I'm backing out, I realize that my brakes don't work. Like almost 0 pressure. Lovely.
My mall plans crushed, I inch my way to the auto repair place at 10 mph with the emergency lights on (ever try to stop your car using friction and the e-brake alone? neither had I, until now..)
So as I sit in the waiting room at the repair shop, the news channel headlines with a breaking story. Another hostage situation, oh joy. Sensationalized useless news coverage. Boring..
Then, mid-yawn, I see where the hostage situation is. The camera crew is sitting outside a Nordstrom's.. at the Chandler mall. Suddenly I'm wide awake. Apparently, an escaped felon shot at police and held people inside the mall hostage...
Had my car not had brake problems, I would have been in there. Stuck as a hostage for 3 hours. Of all the days for me to pick to head to Chandler.. and of all the days for my car to break down. Just another minor chapter in the strange parade of events I call life.

My footsteps resounded on the cold pavement, each step pounding the hard ground, unyielding, unwelcoming. I traced the path that you and I followed what feels like so long ago. The same word escaped through my lips with each staggered breath as I struggled to take in the cold night air.
why.
Another sharp breath, almost choking as the dry air invaded my lungs.
why.
I turned my face to the sky, watching my breath rise around me as smoke, enveloping the stars. A grim smile hinted at my lips as realization took me.
Sometimes there is no answer to "why."
Sometimes, people simply want to destroy something beautiful. To see something fragile and precious crumble.
Like castles in the sand.

Happy New Year everyone!
I fully intended on heading to a bar tonight to watch the ball drop- it's my first year ever not having TV (let alone someone to kiss when the ball dropped).. Unfortunately, AZ decided to have its coldest night in years: a chilly 25 degrees right now. I'm not brave enough to head out when it's this cold (who would be?!)!
I miss you Anderson Cooper and your New Years special!!
